The ZF 8HP generation changes the answer

There is no single best solution for every swap. With a compatible GEN1 8HP45 or 8HP70, MaxxECU can control the engine and transmission in one environment. With a GEN2 8HP50 or 8HP75, MaxxECU controls the engine and TurboLamik controls the transmission. A GEN3 8HP51 or 8HP76 is also TurboLamik-compatible after installing the corresponding GEN2 valve body.

In short: GEN1 45/70 = integrated MaxxECU control available. GEN2 50/75 = MaxxECU + TurboLamik. GEN3 51/76 = MaxxECU + TurboLamik with a GEN2 50/75 valve body.

The GEN2 valve body is mandatory when using TurboLamik with a GEN3 8HP51 or 8HP76.

Why consider MaxxECU instead of Haltech + TurboLamik?

For a compatible GEN1 swap, MaxxECU can reduce controller count and centralize engine calibration, torque-reduction requests and transmission strategies. That can simplify diagnostics and development.

For a GEN2 or GEN3 swap, TurboLamik remains useful. Choosing MaxxECU for engine management keeps its features, logging, CAN tools and support while TurboLamik handles the transmission. GEN3 requires the valve-body conversion described above.

When should you choose each solution?

Choose integrated MaxxECU when:

  • The transmission is a compatible GEN1 8HP45 or 8HP70
  • You want engine and transmission control in one environment
  • You are building a RWD street, drag, drift or track car

Choose MaxxECU + TurboLamik when:

  • The transmission is a GEN2 8HP50/75 or a GEN3 8HP51/76 with a GEN2 valve body
  • The build requires a separate transmission controller
  • You want MaxxECU for engine management

Can MaxxECU work with a GEN2 8HP?

Yes. With a GEN2 8HP50 or 8HP75, MaxxECU controls the engine while a TurboLamik TCU controls the transmission.

Can TurboLamik work with a GEN3 8HP?

Yes. An 8HP51 requires a GEN2 8HP50 valve body, while an 8HP76 requires a GEN2 8HP75 valve body.

Is MaxxECU always better than Haltech?
